Noojimo'iwewin: A Virtual VAWA and ICWA Training

Bay Mills Indian Community hosts the multi-disciplinary training for law enforcement, child welfare advocates, and domestic violence advocates to implement effective service and advocacy strategies in cases involving child welfare, domestic violence, or both. --- BRIMLEY, MI - The Bay Mills Indian Community (Gnoozhekaaning) remains committed to the future resilience of Indian Country and the COVID-19 outbreak requires communities to ensure health and safety in new ways. The tribe will host the annual training conference, Noojimo’iwewin: A Virtual VAWA and ICWA Training, August 5-7, 2020 (https://www.twgtrainings.com/noojimo-iwewin2020). Streamed digitally via Zoom, the conference invites law enforcement officials, attorneys, and social work advocates from all communities to look forward from domestic violence. When applied to the law, noojimo’iwewin, healing the mind and body as well as illness, can guide community advocates in ensuring the safety of future generations. Federal laws like the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) address concerns that tribes face when violence occurs. While dealing with the legal aspects of these concerns, tribal communities can also heal through appropriate community and culturally-based justice and advocacy.
