Jury Pool Selection

VAWA 2013 includes a requirement that tribes exercising SDVCJ guarantee the right to a trial by an impartial jury that is drawn from sources that “reflect a fair cross section of the community” and “do not systematically exclude any distinctive group in the community, including non-Indians.”

This is a new requirement that will require many implementing tribes to revise their current jury selection processes.

Strategies for Increasing Responses to Jury Summons

A common problem faced by tribal courts is getting people who are summoned for jury service to appear for service on the trial date. In this 90-minute webinar, Paula Hannaford-Agor, the Director of the Center for Jury Studies at the National Center for State Courts, describes current research on why prospective jurors fail to appear and successful strategies employed by state and local courts to address this problem.

This webinar will also discusses the components of a jury plan and considerations for resuming jury trials during the COVID-19 pandemic.
