“The National Congress of American Indians honors the life and public service of President George H.W. Bush. We recognize his contributions as a Navy veteran who bravely served our country in World War II, and as a leader who helped to advance priorities deemed critical by Indian Country. From land and environmental protections to Native language revitalization to the repatriation of sacred items, President Bush’s fostering of a more collaborative government-to-government relationship with tribal nations lives on through policies that recognize and support tribal sovereignty and self-governance. On this day, as the country mourns a distinguished national hero, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and many friends of President George Herbert Walker Bush.”
