NCAI Mourns Lives Lost in Orlando and Stands With Its Partners Against Hate and Violence

On behalf of Indian Country, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed or wounded in Sunday’s horrific mass shooting incident in Orlando. We offer them and the entire Orlando community our support in their time of grief, and we hope that they can find some measure of peace and healing in the days, months, and years to come.

As we come together as a nation to try to make sense of this tragedy, NCAI affirms its support for the full equality of all people, including two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, in furtherance of the cause of human rights and the principle of non-discrimination. We join our social justice partners in standing against hate and violence in all forms against all Americans, no matter their race, ethnicity, religious background, or sexual orientation.

We recognize that in the coming days, much conversation will be focused on what could have been done differently to prevent this attack, and what we could do to prevent similar attacks from taking place again and again in the future. We hope that finally, this time, this dialogue will produce substantive action that will make the country a safer place for all Americans.

- NCAI Executive Director Jacqueline Pata
