WASHINGTON, DC – The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) is pleased to see that the Department of the Interior has released its proposed changes to the federal recognition regulations. These proposed changes would cause the process to fall in line with the policy laid out in the Indian Reorganization Act and promotes consistency and transparency for those seeking recognition.
Upon hearing the proposal had been released, NCAI President Brian Cladoosby said:
“Revising these regulations is an important step in bringing our government to government relationship into the 21st century. For too long, tribes have been forced to seek recognition through a process developed during a time when every effort was made to make life for Native peoples more difficult. I look forward a nation-to-nation engagement to review these proposed changes with tribal leaders and the federal government.”
In October 2013, NCAI passed a resolution supporting Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) efforts to change the regulations and calling for the changes to create “a fair and just process for the acknowledgment of Indian tribes unjustly left off of the list of federally recognized tribes.”
