About the Event:

The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) - in partnership with regional intertribal organizations, tribal nations, and other national tribal organizations - invites tribal leaders and tribal advocates to the 2014 Tribal Unity Gathering and Legislative Impact Days on Tuesday September 16 & Wednesday September17, 2014. The Tribal Leader Briefing will be held September 16, 2014—in Room 628 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building—with coffee/registration at 8:30am and remarks beginning at 9:00am. During the morning briefing, members of Congress and the Administration speak on their commitments and priorities towards furthering the federal trust responsibility and policy analysts will brief attendees on the current state of each legislative issue area.  Following the briefing, tribal leaders and representatives are encouraged to meet with their Congressional delegations to encourage enactment of these important pieces of legislation during the remainder of this Congress.

The Tribal Unity Impact gathering will address several important issues affecting Indian Country:
·         Tribal Homelands/Land Restoration (Carcieri)
·         Voting Rights
·         Tribal Tax Policy
·         Tribal Self Governance
·         Native Languages
·         Reauthorization of Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act
·         Update on the Federal Budget & Appropriations

Please join us for a Press Conference immediately following the Tribal Unity Days Briefing. NCAI and tribal leadership will be joined by our partners in the civil rights community and Members of Congress to discuss ongoing efforts related to the Change the Mascot Campaign. The Press Conference will be held in the Senate Committee Indian Affairs Hearing Room—Senate Dirksen Building Room 628—from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.”
Tribal Unity Impact Days occurs in the fall of each year to provide tribes an opportunity to coordinate a unified voice around key issues in Washington, and most importantly to make Indian Country's presence felt in the halls of Congress and across the Administration. This year, it will be important for tribal leaders and representatives to hear from Congress and meet with their delegations as we try to pass important legislation in the remaining days of this Congress.
