\n The conference keynote is Dr. Ryan E. Emanuel\, Associate Professor and University Faculty Scholar in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State University. The title of his talk is I ndigenous Peoples and the 21st Century Environment: Challenges and Opportun ities for American Indians in the Southeast. Dr. Emanuel will examine the e nvironmental stress points facing contemporary Indigenous peoples as they w ork to maintain their historical\, spiritual\, and cultural connections to the natural world. He focuses on American Indians in the southeastern Unite d States\, where tribal communities and individuals face numerous environme ntal challenges ranging from proposed gas pipelines to climate change\, and continue to exercise creativity and resilience in facing these ongoing cha llenges.
